Brooklin Redmen add 10 new bodies through draft

Four Whitby Warriors also protected by Major Series Lacrosse club

WHITBY -- Wayne Colley hopes the Brooklin Redmen rebuilding phase was accelerated in a big way on Sunday.

After protecting four local graduating junior players last week, the general manager of the Redmen selected 10 new players in a pair of Major Series Lacrosse drafts held at the Iroquois Park Sports Centre Sunday.

"I'm hoping every one of them will give the people existing a run and the best players will be there," Colley said, looking forward to the team's training camp in May.

"You've got to earn your keep. We only won four games last year. Obviously you've got to make changes to get better."

Prior to the drafts, Colley protected four players who closed out their junior careers with the Whitby Warriors last season: Mitch McMichael, Kyle Goodchild, Adam Derks and Coady Adamson.

With the dispersal draft of the St. Regis Indians, Colley landed goalie Angus Goodleaf with the third pick and Cody Jacobs in the second round.

In the junior draft, Colley scooped up Kevin Brownell from Burlington with the second overall pick and added three more in the first round: goalie Nick Rose from Orangeville third, Damon Edwards from Toronto seventh and Sean Gillis from Orangeville eighth.

In subsequent rounds, the Redmen added Matt Hicks from Burlington, Dustin Dunn from Peterborough, Chris Moulson from Burlington and Justin Delormier from Akwesasne.

In adding Goodleaf and Rose, Colley now has several young goaltenders he hope will vie for the backup job along with Joel Weber and Kurtis Wagar.

"I've already got Mike Miron signed," Colley said. "I just want somebody to push him to make him better."
