Fury floundering as season winds down

Club has fallen into seven place in CCHL's East Division

Feb 03, 2010 - 07:30 AM

WHITBY -- Two straight losses by a combined score of 11-2 has left the Whitby Fury reeling heading into the final week of the Central Canadian Hockey League regular season.

The Fury now sit in seventh place, just one point up on the Ajax Attack following losses of 9-1 to the Toronto Junior Canadiens and 2-1 to the Stouffville Spirit.

In Saturday's loss to Toronto, a dreadful final 30 minutes turned a competitive game into a blowout. Dillan Fox scored what turned out to be Whitby's only goal of the game at 9:38 of the second period, making it 2-1 Toronto at the time. However, two more Junior Canadiens goals before the period was out and five unanswered in the third put things away emphatically.

Jordan Tanner started in goal, but was yanked by coach John Winder 1:08 into the third following the fourth Toronto goal. DJ Torreneuva replaced him, but could fare no better, allowing four more goals.

Last Thursday's game was closer, but the offence struggled with Taylor Law tallying the only Whitby marker. Two power play goals by the Spirit, one in the first and one in the second, were all they needed.

The Fury finish the regular season with a home game Thursday against the Cobourg Cougars before hitting the road for two, Friday in Peterborough and Sunday at Dixie.

Wins in all three would leave Whitby (23-20-4) with 56 points and a shot at moving up from seventh in the division, which would help the team avoid Bowmanville or Wellington in the first round.
