Brooklin Redmen playoff hopes in grave danger

Drop into last place with Thursday's Major Series Lacrosse loss in Barrie

Jul 03, 2009 - 11:16 AM

BARRIE -- The playoff hopes of the Brooklin Redmen suffered a big blow Thursday night in Barrie.

A 10-8 loss to the Barrie Lakeshores has left the Redmen alone in last place in the Major Series Lacrosse league. The Redmen fell to 2-11 for the season and are two points back of the Lakeshores (3-9) in the battle for the sixth and final playoff spot.

With only five games remaining on the schedule, the Redmen will almost certainly have to beat Barrie the next time they meet, July 15 in Whitby, to have any hope of reaching the post-season.

On Thursday, the Redmen never had the lead, falling behind 3-1 through one period and 7-2 through two before a third-period rally fell short.

The Redmen scored four times in the final three minutes as coach Peter Vipond employed a two-way approach, leaving the line of Jon Durno, Matt Carroll, Geoff Griffiths, Wes McDonald and Ian Crashley on the floor for about two minutes to play both offence and defence.

Jason Mainer led the Brooklin attack with three goals and two assists, while Durno scored a pair. Carroll, Derek Hopcroft and David Brown had the other goals in a losing cause.

Nate Sanderson paced the Barrie offence with two goals and five assists.

The Redmen will play host to the first-place Six Nations Chiefs Wednesday, 8 p.m. at Iroquois Park, then travel to Brampton the next night to face former captain Shawn Williams and the Excelsiors for the first time since Williams was traded.
