U9s blank Whitby to win Durham league soccer title

AJAX -- The Ajax Madrid boys' under-nine soccer team hoisted the Cup after capturing the Durham Soccer League's Cup Day Tournament in Scugog recently.
In the final, Madrid scored an impressive 8-0 victory over Whitby. To arrive in the final, the Ajax U9s tamed the Pickering Wild 3-1.
Madrid emerged from a strong pool of teams, including the Ajax Impact, Darlington Strikers and Whitby TC, with two wins and a tie. Madrid blanked Whitby 8-0, played to a 1-1 tie with the Ajax Impact and scored a 10-0 win over another Whitby squad.
All told, Madrid scored 27 goals in the tournament, while surrendering only two.
The Cup victory was just one in a long line of triumphs for Ajax Madrid this season. The squad also earned titles at the West Niagara Invitational, Woodbridge Invitational Tournament and the Toronto Cup. Ajax Madrid was also finalists at the Whitby Invitational and Ajax Tournament.
Ajax Madrid compiled an impressive 34-5-4 record this outdoor season.
Team members are Caleb Washington, Stefan Smith, Dante Morrissette, Drew Nicholson, Matthew Brown-Vaughan, Mackinley Burns, Kyle Humby, Jarek Brome, Alex Wisco, Cameron Purdy, Matthew Mattila, Vince Giuga and Troy Pugh.
Mark Purdy coaches the team, assisted by Logan Purdy, Randy Pugh and Rod Wisco. The manager is Verona Smith.
