DURHAM -- Playing many of the best women's teams in the U.S., the Durham Junior Lightning fared well at the North American Hockey Academy (NAHA) 2008 Labor Day Tournament in Burlington, Vt. last weekend.
The tournament featured 27 teams playing in five divisions, consisting mainly of U.S. teams, with several Canadian squads also in the mix.
The Junior Lightning played well, despite it being early in the season, earning their way to the semifinal before falling to Assabet (Concord, Mass.) in the semifinal 2-0. Assabet went on to capture the tournament championship.
The Junior Lightning advanced to the semis after downing host North American Hockey Academy 'White' in the quarter-finals 5-4 in an extremely challenging contest.
In pool play, the Junior Lightning finished atop their division after recording victories over Pacific Steelers Blue (6-1) and Team Alaska (8-0) and toughed out a tie against Assabet (2-2).
Durham's Alannah Wakefield was named to the all-tournament team.
Both the Durham Junior Lightning and the Lightning midget 'AA's will compete in the Stoney Creek tournaments -- the midgets in the Midget Showcase event from Sept. 12 to 14 and the juniors in the Stoney Creek University Showcase on Sept. 19 to 21.
Junior Lightning team members are Michelle Sabourin, Shannon Stoneburgh, Jessica Ronald, Jamie Hatheway, Alannah Wakefield, Nicole Gifford, Jessie Vella, Katelyn Hill, Lisa Stathopolous, Andie Ledonne, Jenn Daly, Christina Paterson, Danielle Skirrow, Kailey Chappell, Margot Scharge, Victoria Powers and Kimmie Caggiula.
