Bicyclists need place to ride, too

Jul 02, 2009 - 10:52 AM

To the editor:

Re: Stop bike riders from rolling on sidewalks, Arnaldo Beni letter, June 26.

I also have a pet peeve: Every time I place my feet upon my bike pedals I almost end up getting hit by a vehicle driving dangerously close and fast behind me.

Most cyclists fear riding on city streets; cars are not polite sharers of the road.

The bylaw states that it is illegal to ride on the sidewalk only in the downtown core, otherwise it is perfectly legal. Please keep in mind, since Oshawa is basically void of any bike-safe areas to ride, especially for children, I feel that we as bicyclists should have the right to ride on the sidewalk.

Instead of asking police to deal with bicyclists on the sidewalk, why not ask the City why there are virtually no safe spaces on roads for bikes?

If bikers had a safe space to ride (ie: bike lanes), then I doubt they would ride on the sidewalk. All I ask is to not place your anger on the laps of bicyclists, but perhaps on the heads of the City politicians who should make safe spaces for all methods of transportation.
