To the editor:
I often take my dog for a walk along the Durham Trail or even the boardwalk at Lakeview Park and am truly appalled by the many, many, inconsiderate cyclists who come upon pedestrians from behind and cannot show the common courtesy of a warning.
Just a short time ago, I actually had a bike overtake me from behind and hit my elbow with his handlebar. For the record, most bikes are quite silent when approaching from behind so there is great potential for an accident which could easily be avoided with a simple shout, something like, "bike coming" or "coming left," etc. Cyclists could also have a bell on their handlebars though, I suspect, many would argue that they are for a child's bike. I would counter that, if a bell is too childish then be adult enough to show some consideration for foot pedestrians by offering a simple shout to alert them to the danger.
I have two bad knees and, on occasion, a knee will buckle causing me to lurch to one side. As well, even though my dog is on a short leash, dogs are wont to lunge at things like squirrels, etc., and can easily come into contact with discourteous cyclists passing from behind.
I pity the inconsiderate fool who should happen to hit my dog as, I'll soon teach him the difference between a lack of common courtesy and enraged discourtesy.
