WHITBY -- Police investigating a suspected drunk driver early Saturday in Whitby wound up arresting a man found to be carrying a loaded submachine gun.

Durham cops found a man asleep at the wheel of his car on Thickson Road at Dundas Street at 4:30 a.m. and as they escorted him to a waiting cruiser they discovered he was carrying two flick knives on his belt, Sergeant Paul McCurbin said. A further search revealed a loaded Uzi was tucked into the back of the man's pants, he said.

Police seized the weapons and took the man into custody; breath tests showed him to be at twice the legal blood-alcohol limit, Sgt. McCurbin said.

A Whitby man faces impaired driving and weapons charges.
