WHITBY -- A new elementary school may soon be popping up near the town's Lynde Shores area if councillors approve a site plan application for the development.
The Durham District School Board is looking to construct a two-storey, 6,004 square metre building for housing 27 classrooms that will accommodate 365 students.
The development is essential to accommodating the anticipated population growth for that area of the town, situated along Whitby Shores Greenway, south of Victoria Street and west of Gordon Street.
If approved, the addition could be one of the new schools Whitby will be seeing after recent announcements that three schools will be closing this year.
Palmerston, Leslie McFarlane and Florence M. Heard public schools have been deemed prohibitive to repair and will be shutting their doors as part of a school accommodation review committee's recommendations.
School board officials plan to build a new school on the Leslie McFarlane site and make changes at Jack Miner, Pringle Creek, and Captain Michael VandenBos public schools.
Council will vote on the approval of the application for the school in the Lynde Shores area on Monday, June 29.
