Whitby eager to throw its Doors Open every year

Jun 22, 2009 - 03:18 PM

WHITBY -- With two successful Doors Open events already achieved, the Town is looking to solidify Whitby's participation in the province-wide initiative.

Staff has presented a report to council recommending that the Town participate in Doors Open Ontario annually and that the first Saturday in May be set aside as the official day of the event.

Doors Open Ontario is a program that celebrates the unique and treasured pasts of communities across the province. Whitby is one of more than 55 Ontario communities that offer participants a chance to explore local architectural, cultural and natural history.

The Town's first time participating was in 2008 and managed to draw 994 visits from community members. That number was topped with a whopping 2,529 visits this year.

The event is free and features many sites that aren't normally open to the public. Some of the most popular locations were the Centennial Building, All Saints' Anglican Church and Trafalgar Castle School.

The total budget for the 2009 event was $3,5050, plus $1,500 from a sponsor. The estimated cost of running the program in 2010 sits at about $4,000.
