WHITBY -- An impaired driving charge has been laid against one driver after a crash at a Whitby intersection Monday night that sent several people to hospital with minor injuries.

The 9:20 p.m. crash spread glass and debris across the road at Manning Road and Anderson Street, trapping one person in a vehicle that was hit broadside.

Durham police Sergeant Paul McCurbin said a northbound Honda Civic driven by an Ajax man appears to have run a red light at the intersection, slamming into an SUV carrying a driver and three passengers.

Three teens in a nearby parking lot said they saw the impact after they heard the sound of tires squealing.

"It was like a really, really loud bang that sounded like a gunshot," Jodie Mitchell, 14, said.

She and friends Tyler Baker, 14, and Andrew Stevens, 13, said the impact caused one vehicle to flip and the other began smoking under the hood as it caught fire.

Emergency crews doused the fire and rescued the driver.

Eyewitnesses said the driver appeared to have a gash on his forehead.

The driver of the SUV was trapped for more than 25 minutes and was taken to hospital, as was a passenger.

Police have charged Christopher Roche, 22, of Whittington Court in Ajax with impaired driving causing bodily harm and dangerous driving causing bodily harm.
