WHITBY -- Whitby Harbour Days floats back into town this year for a two-day celebration at the town's waterfront July 25 and 26.
The event will highlight Whitby's unique harbour facilities, including the Port Whitby Marina, the Whitby Yacht Club, Rotary Sunrise Park, Waterfront Trail, the Lions' Promenade and Kiwanis Heydonshore Park.
Many special activities are planned for Whitby Harbour Days, which has been running for more than 10 years and always draws large crowds looking to experience the waterfront first-hand, marina supervisor Keenan Watters said.
Events on Friday, July 25, run from 4 p.m. to dusk. They include a movie at Heydonshore Park and the largest tall ship in Ontario, the Empire Sandy, will dock at Whitby pier and be available for 90-minute cruises.
There will also be water-ski shows, waterfront and community displays, children's activities, canoe and kayak demonstrations and musical performances.
The fun continues Saturday, July 26, with events planned from noon to dusk, with a closing Dentistry on Dundas fireworks show at the marina.
Saturday's special events include a sizzling challenge in Rotary Club of Whitby Sunrise's Great Canadian Steak Cook-out and a visit from Terry Fox's Marathon of Hope van that will be parked by the town pier on Water Street.
Admission, parking, and shuttle for this event are free, which is made possible through contributions from community and corporate sponsors.
Whitby Harbour Days is the largest free admission event in Whitby. It brought in between 12,000 to 15,000 people last year, Mr. Watters said, with organizers expecting even more this year.
"We would love everyone to come out who has some free time on the weekend, even if it's just for one of the days," he said. "It has grown so much now that there's something for everyone to enjoy."
Cruise tickets are available at the park or in advance at Iroquois Park Sports Complex, Civic Recreation Centre and Whitby Senior Services Centre. For more information on scheduled events, visit the community events page at www.whitby.ca.
