Well, those who are around have begun the process at least.
With several players still absent due to school commitments north and south of the border, the Warriors' training camp has been a little sparse in terms of bodies at this point.
"We really have about eight guys at home at the moment," says coach Jeff McComb, back for another year at the helm. "Yes we've been practising and the first couple weeks we went with the Gaels which helped our numbers. But in terms of actually being able to do anything as a group and put any team concepts together, we haven't done that much. With only eight or nine guys at home it makes it tough."
However, reinforcements are on the way.
"We've got five or six at Canadian universities and they'll all pretty much be home Thursday night or Friday night," McComb said Wednesday. "Jay Winder, Matt Carroll, Mike Pearson, Joel Weber, Matt Savoie and Chris Davey they should all be back."
The return of those players should provide a recognizable face to the Warriors lineup tomorrow when they host a pair exhibition games against the Mississauga Tomahawks and Peterborough Lakers. The first game goes at 9:30 a.m., the other 12 p.m. with both being played on Pad 1 at Iroquois Park.
Then, once the likes of Zack Greer, Nick Cotter, Kyle O'Brien and Brad Levick return from U.S. schools, the Warriors should be in pretty good shape.
In the meantime, McComb says not much in the terms of new talent has really caught his eye in the first couple of weeks of camp. But the way this year's roster is constructed, that's not really a bad thing.
"With the number of kids we have, 21-year-olds in their last year, we have 15 or 16 kids in that boat, we really didn't have a spot for any of the midget players coming up," McComb admits. "I am sure three or four of them are going to make the Gaels though. That will be good to get a year under their belts because we are certainly going to need help next year after we graduate the boatload we have this year."
McComb added that for the first couple of weeks, various members of the Clarington Green Gaels will be counted on to fill roster spots not yet plugged by those away at school.
NOTES: Colin Baker and Shane Sargent were the only two Warriors to move on due to age after last season... Steve Seedhouse will not return to the team, opting instead to remain at school in the U.S. in pursuit of a medical career... The regular season opener for the Warriors will go Friday May 11 at Iroquois Park 8 p.m.
