Eliminate the Peterborough Lakers from the Ontario Lacrosse Association Jr. A league playoffs.
They afforded themselves that opportunity last night (after our deadline) thanks to a couple of tight wins in Game 3 and 4 of their first round series.
Monday night in Peterborough, the Lakers jumped out to 5-1 first period lead forcing the Warriors to storm back with four in the second and three in the third before Nick Carson capped the rally with an overtime marker at 6:21 of the extra frame, giving Whitby the 9-8 victory and a 3-1 series lead.
Joining Carson on the scoresheet were eight others as Zack Greer, Phil McIlhone, Chris Davey, Kyle O'Brien, Derek Hopcroft, Steve Hutchins, Nick Cotter and Brad Levick all scored single tallies.
Two nights earlier in Whitby, led by the four points of Hopcroft, the Warriors posted a 9-7 victory to reclaim the series lead after Peterborough had evened it at 1-1 by claiming a 10-7 home floor victory Friday night.
A furious start saw the Warriors jump out to a 4-0 advantage prior to the midway mark of the first period. The Lakers made it tight before the frame ended, scoring three times, however, another four-goal Whitby outburst in the second provided a five-goal cushion heading into the third.
Continuing with the theme of the night, the Lakers went on a four-goal run of their own to tighten the gap, but Cotter closed things out with an empty netter.
The goal was Cotter's second of the game, while Justin Fox also scored twice and singles went to Hopcroft, O'Brien, Levick, Matt Savoie and Marc Jackson.
If necessary, Game 6 of the series will go in Peterborough Thursday night, with Game 7 slated for Friday in Whitby at 8:30 p.m.
