After edging the visiting Lakers 9-8 in Game 1 of their Jr. A lacrosse best-of-seven quarterfinal Tuesday night at Iroquois Park Sports Centre, coach Jeff McComb gave his club a grade of 'B', hoping the 'A' game surfaces as the series progresses.
"For the most part we played really well, but we had a few lapses," said McComb in assessing his team's performance. "We had a few lapses in our intensity and concentration levels and it let them back in the game."
The Warriors held leads of 5-2 and 8-5 at varying points in the second period. But the Lakers rallied from both three goal deficits to tie the game, including scoring the final goal of the second period and two within the opening 1:04 of the third to knot things at 8-8.
Justin Fox, with his third of the night, tallied the game winner with 12:54 remaining in the third to give the Warriors the win, with Game 2 tonight in Peterborough.
McComb noted that the familiarity of the two teams often changes the focus of the game with a lot of extra-curricular stuff taking place on the floor. The teams always seem to encounter each other in the playoffs, and going beyond the junior ranks, have battled in their respective rep programs since the ages of six or seven, he adds.
"Peterborough is a solid team at both ends of the floor," said McComb in measuring up the opposition. "They execute around the net and are very good off turnovers and loose balls and take advantage of us in those areas. It's something we need to be better at going forward."
In addition to the three goals potted by Fox, Derek Hopcroft scored twice, with single tallies going to Chris Davey, Marc Jackson, Steve Hutchins and Kyle O'Brien.
A trio of players, including Matt Carroll, Zack Greer and Mitch McMichael, had three assists each on the night, while goaltender Joel Weber was credited with two.
The third game of the series goes Saturday in Whitby at 8 p.m., with Game 4 back in Peterborough on Monday.
