OTTAWA -- The Durham Attack 17U Black girls' volleyball team continued its winning ways as they captured the national title for the fourth straight year, in Ottawa.

Coming in as the third seed, the Attack drew some tough pools as they battled through the first two days, but never dropped a set.

"It was amazing to not lose a single set," coach Anne Botica-Grover said. "It's really rare to see that but it's a testament to how badly they wanted to win. This team is used to winning so that experience and motivation definitely helped."

In the semifinals, Durham would face a very physical team from Calgary. The smallest player was 5-foot-8 and the tallest was 6-foot-2. Unfortunately for Calgary, they hadn't been together long and according to Botica-Grover, that inexperience was the deciding factor.

"Walking into that game, I was a little worried because they were so much bigger than we were," the coach explained. "We just played good ball control and the confidence the girls had in each other from playing together for so long, really lifted them to the win."

The finals would prove to be the toughest test of the year for the Attack 17U's. They would lock horns with the number one seed, Brandon Storm. The match was close and in both sets there was never more than a three-point spread at anytime.

"It was a real battle against Brandon," Botica-Grover said. "We didn't give up and it was one of the first times that the girls had to really work for each point. Every single player brought something and they all played well."

Botica-Grover went on to explain that in past tournaments, there were key players that carried the team, but this was a collective win.

During the match against the Storm, it was tied at 12 when both teams rallied back and forth for over a minute and a half. Botica-Grover was impressed with Brandon during the rally because they were picking up wonderful hits that she thought would for sure go down.

She noted that it was then, that the girls looked at each other and knew they could win the match. In the second set, the Attack was down 25-24 but kept battling, eventually taking the championship by a score of 30-28.

The majority of the 17U's will come back next year for the 18U team. Botica-Grover plans to take the year off but will help whenever she can.

"I will predict that the 18U's will be an amazing team," she said. "I ended this year on a high note."
