The tournament is to honour the life and memory of Ian Thompson. Proceeds are allocated in three ways: a trust fund has been set up for Thompson's two young children; a scholarship has been established in his name at G.L. Roberts Secondary School, where Thompson was an educator for many years; and the remaining proceeds will be used for development and support of youth rugby at the Oshawa Vikings Rugby Club (Thompson Park).

The Golf Classic will include dinner, awards and a silent auction as well as the round of golf. Registration and lunch is at 11 a.m. followed by a shotgun style start beginning at 1 p.m. The day of golf will end with dinner, awards and the silent auction commencing at 7 p.m.
