PICKERING -- Erin Rynberk has been a force on frozen ice at the Special Olympics; now she'll try to shine in the water.

The 22-year-old Ajax resident has won world Special Olympics gold in figure skating. But, she's since hung up the figure skates, and has traded them in for speedskates in the winter. But, during the summer, she's concentrating on her other sporting love -- swimming.

And, Rynberk and four other members of the Oshawa-based Durham Dolphins will attempt to swim well against approximately 200 other Special Olympians from across Ontario at the Spring Games this month.

The swimming competition will be hosted at the Pickering Recreation Complex pool -- the lone event among the five sports to be held outside of Oshawa.

She will be joined by four of the approximately 25-member Dolphins club: Laura MacDonald of Courtice, Andrew Boyd and Blair Desjardins of Oshawa and Ashley Mitchell of Ajax.

Rynberk says she's happy to be swimming close to home.

"I'm really excited because it's at home and more of my family and friends can come and watch me, so I'm very excited," she says.

She's been swimming competitively through the Dolphins' organization for the past six years. Although she enjoys swimming in the distance events, she's going to try her hand at competing in the sprint events at the Spring Games.

Rynberk says her chief goal, simply, is to do her best and hopefully better her best times in each of her events.

"One of my goals is to beat all my times. I just want to do my best -- that's important to me," she says.

The swimming event at the Spring Games is being organized by Pickering resident Luke Feetham at the Pickering complex pool where athletes from all over Ontario will compete on Friday and Saturday, May 30 and 31. In addition to the swimmers, 50 coaches will also be with their respective teams.

The swimmers, says Feetham, will compete in all four disciplines -- freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly and backstroke -- as well as the individual medley and at distances of 25 metres up to 400 metres.

Feetham's happy to note many of the 80 volunteers expected at the swimming venue will be from the City of Pickering. As well, the City donated the use of the pool for the weekend event.

The local swimmers with the Dolphins' club qualified for the Spring Games after attending a regional qualifier in Lindsay last year.

Rynberk's set to swim in the 25-metre, 50m and 100m freestyle and the 100m individual medley.

Meanwhile, MacDonald will compete in the 25m and 50m free, the 25m back and the 25m breast.

Boyd will swim the 50m, 100m and 200m free and the 25m back.

Mitchell will compete in the 25m, 50m and 100m free and the 25m back.

Desjardins' events are the 50m, 100m and 200m free.

The swimming competition at the Spring Games serves as a qualifier for the National Special Olympic Games in London, Ontario in 2010.
