Brooklin Redmen drop another in Major Series Lacrosse

Now 1-5 for the season after 15-10 loss to Six Nations

Jun 04, 2009 - 02:06 PM

WHITBY -- The Brooklin Redmen finally have some time to breathe and, they hope, regroup from an awful start to the Major Series Lacrosse season.

With their first week-long break of the season, the Redmen will try to rectify the problems that have led to a 1-5 record so far.

Unfortunately, it's not likely to get any easier when the perennially-strong Peterborough Lakers check into Iroquois Park for an 8 p.m. start next Wednesday. The Lakers prevailed 11-6 in the only other encounter between the two teams, in Peterborough.

This past Wednesday, the Redmen nodded off in the second period, as the visiting Six Nations Chiefs scored an 8-1 advantage in the frame en route to a 15-10 victory.

Jon Durno helped get the Redmen off to a good start, scoring twice in the opening frame as Brooklin jumped out to a 5-3 lead. But the Chiefs dominated the second, taking a five-goal lead that they held through the third.

Derek Hopcroft was named the Redmen player of the game with a hat trick and an assist, while captain Shawn Williams turned in his typical strong performance with a goal and four helpers. Williams leads the league with 29 points through six games.

Stephen Hoar, Steve Hutchins and Ian Crashley each had a goal and an assist, with Jason Mainer also scoring in defeat.

Roger Vyse sparked the Chiefs, scoring twice early in the second period to tie the game and finishing with four goals and two helpers. Tom Montour also had six points, including a pair of goals, while Cody Jamieson chipped in with three goals and two assists.

Kurtis Wagar picked up two assist in goal for the Redmen, but was tagged with the loss despite a 60-54 Brooklin advantage in shots on goal.
