BROOKLIN -- The Brooklin Merchants hope to begin celebrating their 10th anniversary season with a win Sunday, when they open the Senior B lacrosse season at home against the Peterborough/Norwood Nitro.
The Merchants concluded a three-week training camp last Sunday and are ready for the 4 p.m. game at the Luther Vipond Memorial Arena in Brooklin.
They are hoping to improve on a successful 2008 campaign, which saw the squad finish in first place in the Eastern Division regular season and went on to lose in the OLA final to the eventual Presidents Cup-winning Owen Sound Woodsmen.
A number of veteran players from 2008 are returning and coach/GM Steve McCarthy hopes to upgrade the talent depth with the signing of a couple of former Major players.
Some of the key returning players are Rick McCullouch in goal, captain Brad Reed and defensive standouts Daryl Jackson and Casey Dupont.
McCarthy still has some tweaking to do with the roster over the next couple of weeks, but feels they should be ready to go Sunday with a strong line-up.
"With some of our players away at school or not available due to work or coaching commitments, we will have a different look to start off the season," he says. "Some of our younger players are going to get an opportunity to grab a roster spot and will be asked to take on a bigger role than they may have had in the past."
