MVP trophy named after former star player

OSHAWA -- The sporting community at Durham College was shocked with the sudden death of former basketball player Bonnie Slaughter earlier this year; however, it's doing its best to make sure her legacy lives on in these parts.
The athletic department has dedicated the 2008-09 women's basketball season in honour of the former Lords star and members of the team will pay tribute to the three-time most valuable player by wearing a black patch with her number 15 on their uniforms.
Slaughter, originally from Oshawa, died in her Norwood home this past May.
In addition to the jersey patches, she will also have her number displayed on the glass backboards in the Durham College Varsity Gymnasium.
"Dedicating the season to Bonnie in her memory is an important thing to do... important for Bonnie, important for her family, important to the team and important for Durham College," stated Athletic Director Ken Babcock in a press release.
At the Lords' home opener on Oct. 21, a special ceremony and moment of silence will be held in Bonnie's honour. As part of the ceremony, the Lords will present the game ball to Slaughter's fiance Bill Crowdis and young son Colton.
Crowdis is a former standout himself with the Lords' men's basketball program. He is also the current head coach of the Fleming Knights men's program in Peterborough.
While those tributes will last throughout the season, one other will extend far beyond as the Lords have renamed their women's basketball most valuable player award.
"We will be renaming our top women's basketball MVP award, the 'Bonnie Slaughter Memorial DC Women's Basketball Most Valuable Player Award' in Bonnie's memory," stated Babcock. "Naming one of our important awards in women's basketball is very fitting as it will carry on her legacy and the impact she had on DC Women's Basketball. It is very appropriate that it bears her name as she was the only three time winner of the award."
