WHITBY -- With a little more than a week remaining in training camp, things are starting to take shape for the Whitby Fury.
So says general manager Frank Robinson, who watched as his club register its first pre-season victory Monday night, a 9-1 decision over the Villanova Knights.
And while he, like any other GM, would gladly take being on the right side of such a lopsided score, it wasn't the outcome that had him beaming.
"Exhibition games aren't about winning or losing," he said. "We're happy with what we've seen out of our guys, especially the rookies so far."
With knowledge of what to expect from veterans Trevor McKinney, Tim Halloran, Derek Foote, Mike Dempsey and others already in tow, the focus to date in camp for the Fury has been on the youngsters who are trying to make their first step into the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League.
"I like the way the young guys that we've committed to are playing," Robinson said. "They are doing really well. It starts with Colin Burns and Mike Purcell on the back end, Cody Alcock, Matt Dunwoody, Haydon Perroni, Dalton Smith and Brett Holmburg up front. I thought they've proved why we've committed to them already."
There is a chance that neither Alcock or Smith will be with the Fury when the season starts as both are currently away at Ontario Hockey League camps, Alcock in Belleville and Smith in Ottawa.
"We're crossing our fingers there," said the GM, who reiterated, as he did a couple of weeks back, they've got a line on an unnamed veteran goaltender who is also at an OHL camp.
With the training camp roster down to 23, the process of elimination is almost over for the club. Robinson said they are attempting to make their final determination on whether to go with 21 or 22 players to start the season, in addition to fishing around the league in search of some depth for the blue-line.
Whitby's next exhibition game is Thursday at Villanova, while Friday they head to North York. They'll close out the pre-season Sept. 4 at Iroquois Park against Orangeville.
