Women’s soccer team eyes return to Ontario’s elite

OSHAWA -- With plenty of roster holes to fill, Vaso Vujanovic recently added a quartet of athletes to the fold as the Durham Lords women’s soccer program gets set for the 2008-09 season.
Set to join the team when the season starts next month will be Katie Watts of Oshawa, a pair of Ajax residents in Pamela Ogle and Kylie Bracken and Amie Farely of Peterborough.
The new recruits will look to fill the void in the lineup left by the exit of seven starters from last season’s Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Championship and National bronze medal winning squad.
Watts has great potential and should help fill the cleats of departed CCAA player of the year Katie Szeghalmi. Having spent several years within the Oshawa Turul and Oshawa Kicks programs, Watts has developed into a skillful player who uses her outstanding speed to her advantage while patrolling forward and midfield.
In Ogle the Lords obtain a defender on transfer from Cape Breton University, and one who knows how to win, having been a part of a CIS championship team in her first year.
Ogle, a member of the Ajax Soccer Club, has spent the last three years playing for the U21 Inferno team and is expected to be one of the anchors on a solid back end for the Lords.
Bracken comes on board and is viewed as the goaltender of the future for the Lords. At 5-foot-11 Bracken possesses great control in the 18-yard box and also plays a very challenging style.
Like Ogle, Bracken is a member of the Ajax Soccer Club and she will provide great back up to fifth year veteran Ashley Visser of Uxbridge, who is entering her final year.
The fourth recruit in Farley comes by way of the Peterborough City Club and she will join the defensive unit. Last season she helped her high school team capture an OFSAA championship.
With hopes pinned on repeating their success of a year ago, Vujanovic is confident in the mix of players he’ll head into the year with.
“I am looking forward to working the blend of veterans and new recruits, as this combination will renew my vision for a tough, skillful and competitive Durham College women’s soccer team for this fall,” commented Vujanovic in a press release. “We have developed a proud, winning tradition at the College and we hope to continue the success this season.”
Their season opens Sept. 6 at home against Cambrian.
