PORT PERRY -- A 32 year-old Scarborough cyclist is in hospital with serious injuries after a hit-and-run in Port Perry early Sunday morning.
“It looks right now like the cyclist was struck by a vehicle that left the scene,” said Inspector Mario Lessard.
Durham Regional Police Services (DRPS) were called by a passing motorist to the Simcoe and King Streets intersection at 4 a.m., on Sunday, Jan. 17. Police said a 32-year-old Scarborough man was riding his bicycle southbound on Simcoe Street with the light when he was struck by a vehicle.
Police said witnesses who came upon the victim lying in the roadway stopped to offer assistance and contacted 9-1-1 as the male was breathing but not responsive. He was taken to Lakeridge Health Port Perry then later transferred to St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
The Scarborough man, whose identity has not been released, was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, said police.
Police have not yet been able to get a description of the vehicle from the victim. Police closed the roadway for several hours while evidence was collected in the investigation.
Police said the suspect vehicle involved in the collision did not remain at the scene and it's believed it sustained damage to the front end. Police would like to speak to anyone who may have information or witnessed this incident.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Constable Chad Lee of the Traffic Services Branch at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5231or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
