SCUGOG -- An intensive search on land and from the sky led to the discovery of an autistic man several kilometres from his Port Perry home after he was reported missing Monday evening.
Durham police are thanking the community for their assistance during the search, which initially encompassed a large rural area surrounding Port Perry but was focused based on information provided by citizens.
"We ended up speaking to someone who had seen him in the area," Sergeant Nancy van Rooy said.
"He was located five kilometres from home."
The parents of the 22-year-old man returned to their Port Perry home at about 5:20 p.m. Monday and found he was missing along with the family's two dogs. They searched for their son for a time before alerting police.
Durham officers fanned out to do a canvass of the area, joined by members of the canine unit on the ground and assisted from above by the Air 1 helicopter. It was during that canvass that police learned the man had been seen in a rural area north of the town and the search was concentrated there, Sgt. van Rooy said.
He was located at about 11:30 p.m. on Old Simcoe Road near Scugog Line 12. The man did not require medical attention, Sgt. van Rooy said.
