Scugog Stream Teams sought for watershed day

Volunteers needed for annual Check Your Watershed Day on the Nonquon

Jun 24, 2009 - 12:15 PM

SCUGOG -- Kawartha Conservation is seeking volunteers to join its Stream Teams in advance of next month's annual Check Your Watershed Day.

Slated to be held Saturday, July 18, the event will see teams of volunteers, with a trained leader, venture to designated stream-road crossings where they will take measurements such as stream width, depth and flow. The stream crews will also keep a lookout for streams not shown on maps.

The annual, one-day event, which runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., is an opportunity to learn first-hand about the Nonquon watershed. About 30 volunteers are needed to collect the necessary data. Participants are urged to bring family and friends.

No experience is necessary as all skills will be taught the day of the event. A free lunch will be provided.

The Nonquon watershed extends north along the western edge of Lake Scugog, from the Oak Ridges Moraine in the south to Hwy. 7 near Manilla in the north.

Similar events will take place across the province as part of a project to study the watersheds connected to the Oak Ridges Moraine.

For more information or to register, call 647-258-3280, extension 2007, e-mail cywd@citizensenvironmentwatch.org or visit monitoringthemoraine.ca/cywd.
