SCUGOG -- A Great Blue Heron Casino worker and two patrons have been charged in what police allege was a scam that saw illegal payouts made at the facility's roulette table.
The arrests were made June 6 after investigators conducted surveillance on suspects over the course of a number of days, said OPP Staff Sergeant Paul Thompson. He said the OPP's Alcohol and Gaming Enforcement Investigations branch received a tip that a dealer at the roulette table was placing bets after the wheel had spun and passing on winnings to two accomplices.
"The ball would drop and then (the dealer) would place a bet on behalf of the patron," Staff-Sgt. Thompson said.
"The patron was being paid out on roulette after the fact. He was being paid as if he'd won the game of chance." Police aren't saying how long the scam is alleged to have run or how much was paid out, but the three men are charged with theft over $5,000. The dealer, an employee at the Island Road casino for "a number of years", also faces a breach of trust charge, Staff-Sgt. Thompson said.
The identities of the accused men haven't yet been released by police. The men were released on promises to appear in court.
