Port Perry physician to lead Durham's Lakeridge Health doctors

Dr. Kevin Smith appointed Lakeridge's chief of family medicine

SCUGOG -- Port Perry physician Dr. Kevin Smith has been tapped by Lakeridge Health officials to take on a top medical leadership position within the regional health-care provider.

Kevin Empey, Lakeridge's president and chief executive officer, announced on June 11 that Dr. Smith, a veteran Port Perry physician, has been appointed to the position of department chief-family medicine.

The department of family medicine includes general practitioners who provide a wide variety of services such as obstetrics, emergency room care and general medicine. Those services are mainly carried out at Lakeridge's Bowmanville and Port Perry sites, with some services at the Oshawa hospital.

As department chief, Dr. Smith will have a variety of responsibilities, including the quality of professional practice, the physician code of conduct, physician performance management, human resources management, planning and recruitment.

Dr. Smith has practiced in Port Perry since 1993 and has extensive experience in the areas of inpatient and emergency care, said Lakeridge Health in a June 11 press release. He is also a member of the Lakeridge Health Port Perry Palliative Care Team and provides nursing home care.

"As always, our focus continues to be on access, quality of care, and improving the patient experience and outcomes," said Mr. Empey. "Our physician leadership team and their ability to impact positive change across Lakeridge Health is poised to become even stronger as they influence programs and services spanning our hospital network."

For his part, Dr. Smith says he's looking forward to the new challenge.

"As a physician who has worked in Port Perry for many years, other larger hospitals similar to Bowmanville and having trained in a large specialized teaching hospital, I am anxious to work with all of my colleagues across Lakeridge Health," said Dr. Smith. "The transition to program-based medical leadership won't be easy and we'll likely experience a few bumps along the way, but I am confident that it will be successful and will lead to a broader voice for family physicians and our patients."
