AJAX -- The Rouge Valley Health System has won a $10,000 award for a new program focusing on women and children's health.
The health system won the 2009 Innovation Award for Innovations in Health Human Resources, which was presented by Deb Matthews, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, during a health conference last month.
Six achievement grants of $10,000 were awarded. The Rouge Valley project and exhibit, Neonatal and Paediatric Orientation Program Designed for the New Graduate, were developed by Rose Owen, clinical practice leader, neonatal intensive care unit and special care nursery, and Minette MacNeil, clinical practice leader, pediatrics and surgery at Rouge Valley. It gives new nurses a comprehensive knowledge base to enhance caring for the sick newborn child and their families through lab settings and working alongside experienced mentors, for example.
"We are pleasantly surprised and honoured to receive this award," said Ms. MacNeil. "We are proud to have our project celebrated among such an innovative group of other exhibits all aimed at improving the quality of health care given to our patients."
