City says no way to punk band on Canada Day bill

OSHAWA -- A punk band whose Oshawa farewell concert ended in disaster, didn't manage to snag a spot on the City's Canada Day stage.

Toronto rockers the 3Tards had hoped to cap off the Canada Day festivities at Lakeview Park with an 11 p.m. show, but City officials decided it wasn't a good fit, despite a letter-writing campaign by fans.

"The fact is, we did have some problems with their concert and it wouldn't have been a good combination to have this as part of a family function," said Oshawa Mayor John Gray. "I don't want to dictate music taste, but sometimes things aren't compatible. We don't want to create confrontation with other folks who are trying to protect their kids from influences they don't feel are appropriate."

Event promoter Tamara Morahan made a last-ditch attempt to plead her case at council's Monday night meeting, but after waiting an hour for her item to come up on the agenda, council voted 7-4 not to hear her speak.

"It was really insulting," she said. "I just wanted a chance to talk about what happened at the concert and why the band should have had a chance to play at Canada Day."â?¨ On June 20, the 3Tards -- a Toronto band with a loyal following in Oshawa -- played a farewell show in Memorial Park that doubled as a fundraiser for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

The event hit several snags -- noise complaints, arrests, rain delays -- and was shut down before the headlining band had a chance to finish its set.

Ms. Morahan said The 3Tards will still have a chance to say goodbye to their Oshawa fans before disbanding for good this summer.

The band will play the Groove Lounge, 200 John St. W., on Friday, July 17. The doors open at 9 p.m. and admission is $5 in advance or $7 at the door.
