OSHAWA -- Lifeguards from across Ontario will descend on Oshawa during the August long weekend, to showcase their skills and carve out a spot as the best among their peers.
The Ontario Lifesaving Society will host the 2009 Ontario Lifeguard Championships at four Oshawa pools on Aug. 1 and 2.
Participants will compete as teams in various events, including obstacle relay, first aid, water rescue and retrieving and towing a mannequin.
"Lifesaving sport is unlike any other sport," said Julie Twaddle, president elect of the Ontario Lifesaving Society. "It's the only sport in the world where participants first learn skills for a humanitarian purpose."
This marks the first time since 1972 that the annual event has been held in Oshawa.
