Oshawa teen dies in Huntsville-area lake

Aug 26, 2008 - 04:00 PM

HUNTSVILLE -- An Oshawa teen died as he attempted to swim to shore during an outing with friends on a Hunstville-area lake Sunday afternoon, police said.

The youth, identified by Huntsville OPP as Joao (John) Ribeiro, 17, slipped under the surface of the water on Lake Vernon west of Huntsville at about 4 p.m. Sunday. Police said the teen, who was not a strong swimmer, began to struggle after leaving the floating chair in which he'd been seated and attempted to swim to shore.

Witnesses told police the youth began having difficulties about five metres from a dock he was trying to reach.

His body was found the next morning in about 27 feet of water, police said. The death has been labelled accidental but a cause of death will not be determined until autopsy results are in, said OPP Constable Lynda Cranney.
