The waiting is the hardest part

Announcement about Regent grand opening now slated for this morning

OSHAWA -- Oshawa’s Regent Theatre will be open for business on Oct. 25, two months ahead of the deadline set out by the City.

Theatre owner Glyn Laverick confirmed the grand opening date this week, but those waiting to hear which acts will be the first to grace the stage will have to hold on a little longer.

In July, Mr. Laverick said details about the opening night acts would be announced on Aug. 6. That date has been pushed back several times and the big reveal is now set for Monday, Aug. 25.

“We had the opportunity to get one more act in the line-up for the opening, but we wanted to confirm that before we announced anything,” Mr. Laverick said of the delay.

On Monday he plans to announce the opening weekend acts slated for Saturday, Oct. 25 and Sunday Oct. 26, as well as reveal the line-up for the first batch of tickets that will soon go on sale.

“It’s a broad cross section of shows,” he said.

Work on the vacant theatre has been underway since March. Most major tasks, like digging out the concrete floor to allow for sloped seating and stripping blue paint off the exterior brick, are complete.

A sign recently went up outside the theatre advertising that hiring has started for all positions.

Mr. Laverick, who also restored Toronto’s Danforth Music Hall, bought the Regent from the City last fall for $700,000, then received a $700,000 grant under the Central Business District Community Improvement Program.

Under his agreement with the City, he is expected to comply with strict timelines and performance targets, which include a Dec. 31, 2008 deadline to open the theatre, retaining the Regent Theatre name, hiring an experienced theatre director and staging a minimum of 100 events per year.
