Defrauded war veteran victim has Alzheimer's

OSHAWA -- A former caregiver is facing charges after allegedly defrauding an 84-year-old patient of over $30,000.
A member of the victim’s family contacted police after a review of the elderly Oshawa man’s accounts found significant cash shortages between October 2007 and May 2008. The missing funds totalled $34,400.
The victim, who is a retired war veteran, suffers from Alzheimer’s disease and the caregiver was hired by his family to help with daily routines and housework, after a recommendation from an agency.
The review of his accounts was spurred when a family friend witnessed the caregiver charging expensive home decor items to the victim’s credit card. It was later discovered the caregiver had access to the man’s bank card and PIN number and wrote extra paycheques. Other purchases made to the credit card included furniture, clothing, makeup and a trip to the Caribbean.
Karlene Allen, 44 of Nonquon Road in Oshawa, has been charged with three counts of fraud.
