'Separatist' coalition reference outrageous

Dec 03, 2008 - 03:13 PM

To the editor:

I find these outrageous references to a 'separatist' coalition, most recently uttered by Oshawa MP Colin Carrie, to be highly offensive to the intelligence of Canadians everywhere.

The Conservative central message campaign, being parroted about by MPS like Dr. Carrie and Durham's Bev Oda, is nothing short of calculated deceit and deliberate misinformation.

Not only did Stephen Harper sign a document demonstrating his own willingness to align his party with the Bloc in 2004, these allusions to the coalition itself being separatist are blatantly false.

Your readers will know that a minority Parliament always requires the government to seek the support of opposition parties, including the Bloc, which the Conservatives have done themselves.

Moreover, the Bloc will not have any cabinet posts, will continue to sit as opposition members and has agreed to suspend any and all separation matters for 18 months.

If Conservatives, like Dr. Carrie, need some help to understand why this has happened, they can find it south of the border, where Barack Obama said recently, "There is a time to campaign and a time to govern." The Tories' unrelenting dedication to campaigning and their incompetent and neglectful approach to governing is precisely the reason Canadians need a coalition of hope now.
