OSHAWA -- As host and co-owner of the Superdog performances, Herb Williams took some time away from his talented dogs to talk about his 32 years with man’s best friends.
1. Please define “Superdog”.
Well, a Superdog is a dog that loves to perform in front of people.
2. What kind of training is required for these shows?
To walk off-leash, ignore other dogs, don’t bite the audience and generally have fun with the equipment.
3. How long do these dogs train for?
Well they start at three months and some have been performing for 10 years.
4. Why only dogs?
First of all, they’re the No. 1 pet and secondly, there’s nothing compatible about other animals.
5. How do you choose your dogs for the shows?
We do some auditioning. Actually our auditions for the Oshawa shows, we had 25, with two that were beautifully trained.
6. Do you always feature the same dogs?
We actually have 350 dogs that we rotate throughout the country.
7. Why did you choose Oshawa?
I worked in Oshawa for 22 years. It’s quite a change to bring something so successful to Oshawa and people don’t have to drive to Toronto. It’s also a beautiful facility and perfect for our show.
8. Which dog stands out more than the others?
Pot roast, who does nothing. He is a crowd favourite.
9. What made you get involved with Superdogs?
I used to show dogs and won 100 best in shows and I figured there’s more fun to dogs than just showing them.
10. What would you like to see for the future of Superdogs?
I’d love to see a show on broadway called ‘Dogs’.
