Fundraising 24-hour tournament is Sept. 20
Aug 14, 2008 - 11:13 AM
DURHAM -- A 24-hour ball hockey tournament is taking a shot at raising awareness about lupus.
The second annual Cheryl McCune 24-hour Ball Hockey Tournament starts at 11 a.m. Sept. 20 in the Durham College/University of Ontario Institute of Technology parking lot at 2000 Simcoe St., Founders Two Lot.
The tournament helps honour Ms. McCune, a dedicated mother and businesswoman with a commitment to charitable causes. She died in 1998 after a 10-year struggle with lupus. The chronic autoimmune disease affects thousands of Canadians.
Lupus causes inflammation of various parts of the body, especially the skin, joints, blood and kidneys. Generally, a person's immune system would protect against viruses and bacteria, but for those fighting lupus, the ability to tell the difference between foreign substances and the body's own cells and tissues is damaged.
Money raised through the ball hockey tournament goes to the Lupus Foundation.
