BRANTFORD -- Mike Posavad’s prognosticating skills are pretty good.
Last week, before the 100th Allan Cup opened, the coach of the Whitby Dunlops suggested that the Dundas Real McCoys team they were slated to meet in the first game of the tournament would likely be a much different outfit from the one they disposed of in four games to win the Robertson Cup and book their ticket to the national championship last month.
And was he ever right as the Dunlops let a 3-1 first period led slip away before the end of the period and eventually had to settle for a 4-4 overtime draw with the Real McCoys Monday afternoon at the Brantford Civic Centre.
The goals were aplenty in the first period as Dundas’s Rob DeCiantis opened the scoring just 40 seconds in, while Whitby replied in a flurry scoring three times in 8:29 to grab the aforementioned 3-1 lead.
Jay McAuley with a pair and captain Peter MacKellar had the goals. However, Dundas shot back with a pair before the period was out courtesy Ryan Christie and Todd Harvey.
The teams played a scoreless middle frame before Dundas took a 4-3 lead with just over five minutes remaining in regulation on a Brandon Merli goal.
The Dunlops didn’t quit though and MacKellar squared the affair at four with 1:14 remaining. A scoreless five minute overtime followed.
Chad Ford made 27 saves for Whitby, while Brett Leggat turned aside 43 Whitby shots at the other end.
The Dunlops will have a day off on Tuesday before returning to action Wednesday against the Lloydminster Border Kings at 1 p.m.
