Sep 04, 2008 - 12:35 PM

DURHAM -- More than 11,000 students are flooding onto Oshawa's shared college and university campus.

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) welcomed more than 5,500 students, while Durham College started the new year with 6,100 - 3,000 of them first-year pupils.

The college has added four, new, compressed fast-track programs for this school year: biotechnology technologist; chemical engineering technology; environmental technology; and, pharmaceutical and food science technology.

In the UOIT's sixth year, it's launching a number of programs, including its first doctoral program, the establishment of a location in downtown Oshawa and new apartment-style residences at its north Oshawa campus.

Some of its new programs this fall are a bachelor of arts in communications, bachelor of arts in legal studies, and life sciences and digital media specializations are being introduced to the bachelor of science degree. Students can now obtain either a master of applied science or master of engineering in nuclear engineering, and a PhD in mechanical engineering.
