Back to school in Clarington... by the numbers

Sep 03, 2008 - 11:37 AM

CLARINGTON -- It was back-to-school for almost 16,000 students in Clarington this week.

That's how many students, in elementary and high school, hit the books in the Clarington ends of both the Kawartha Pine Ridge and Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic district school boards.

Here's how it breaks down:

KPR 7,136 elementary students*

3,659 secondary students

PVNC 3,133 elementary students*

1,830 secondary students

That also means a lot of school staff. This September, the local separate school board reports having 124.5 full-time equivalent elementary teachers and 96.33 full-time equivalent secondary teachers.

Specific staffing numbers were not available from the local public school board, but spokeswoman Judy Malfara said it was reasonable to assume that since approximately one-third of the board's students are in Clarington, about one-third of KPR's 2,200 teachers, 629 support staff, 291 school administrators (including secretaries, principals and vice-principals), and 310 operations staff work in Clarington.

*KPR lists its students as "full-time equivalent," meaning two half-time kindergarten students would be combined to make one full-time equivalent. PVNC provides actual student numbers.
