Young students express mixed emotions about returning

DURHAM -- The bell has rung and it's time to get back to the routine for hundreds of young children across the region as school returns for another year.

Students gathered outside Sir Samuel Steele Public School in Whitby on Tuesday morning anchored by their parents

"I'm pretty excited to go back," said eight-year-old Alana Burnet, dressed in a pink dress with her hair tied back neatly. "I can't wait to see my friends again and meet new people."

Others like Alexa Magnus, 5, longed for an extended summer break.

"I want to go camping!" she said.

Also embarking upon her first day at school was Jacqui Steer, new principal at Carruthers Creek Public School in Ajax. She said she didn't notice many nervous students while greeting them and their parents outside as most seemed eager to start fresh.

"There's a lot of excitement. I didn't see any teary eyes and the children all seemed to be happy to be back."

Many of the children's parents also expressed their relief.

"It's nice to get back into a schedule and routine," said Pamela Steele, dropping off her daughter Sarah.

"They're not going to be sitting at home bored anymore."
