Major accolades for local newspapers

Metroland Durham Region Media Group wins 32 awards for editorial excellence

Jan 26, 2008 - 11:54 AM

DURHAM -- The Metroland Durham Region Media Group has been honoured with 32 awards at the annual Suburban Newspapers of America contest for editorial excellence.

“This is a tremendous accomplishment that our editorial staff should be extremely proud of,” says Editor-in-Chief Joanne Burghardt.

The Durham division of Metroland, which publishes newspapers in Ajax, Pickering, Whitby, Oshawa, Clarington, Uxbridge, Port Perry and Northumberland County, was among the leaders in newspaper groups across North America coming second only to Heritage Newspapers in the United States who won 35 awards.

Among the awards were honours for Return to Vimy, a major undertaking that involved sending a reporter to Vimy, France to follow more than 700 Durham students participating in the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

Honoured for the sixth consecutive year was the annual ‘Faces of the Future’ special section that profiles students who excel in the arts or sports.

“Faces started out as a tribute to outstanding high school athletes and has grown to include nearly 500 students from every elementary, high school, college and university in Durham Region,” says Mrs. Burghardt.   “With 10 provincial, national and North American awards to its credit, Faces of the Future has become our signature special project and one of the most awarded sections in the community newspaper industry.”

Work on the 2008 edition of Faces of the Future has already begun and letters will soon go out to area schools inviting this year’s nominations.

Northumberland News reporter Peg McCarthy, a veteran member of the Durham staff, was named Journalist of the Year for community newspapers.
