Re: Stop bike riders from rolling on sidewalks, Arnaldo Beni letter, June 26.
I make it a point to follow the rules of the road. I like to treat those who share the road with me with respect and deference. However, I have found that this feeling is not mutual.
There have been many times recently where I have felt menaced while on the roads. Many drivers insist on pushing cyclists onto the farthest edge of the road without leaving us space where many roads are in poor condition.
I must make it clear that while on a bike, I represent an unshielded human body on a few pounds of steel and rubber. A driver is surrounded by thousands of pounds of metal.
If worse comes to worse, the tragedy is fairly one-sided. It falls upon City council to rectify the issues that have led to this situation. Offer bike lanes on major roadways in the downtown core (and hopefully beyond).
Oshawa is a city that is in no way, shape, or form pedestrian or bicycle friendly. I've lived here all my life, and I'm preparing to be amazed to live in a city where I can ride my bike without fear of being pushed off the road.
