SCUGOG -- An elderly Scugog woman was seriously injured while collecting her mail Monday evening after she was struck by a passing vehicle that fled the scene, leaving her lying on the side of the road.
According to Durham police, a 66-year-old Port Perry woman stopped her vehicle along Coates Road West just before 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 8 to pick up her mail and recycling boxes.
The elderly victim had parked her vehicle facing eastbound in the westbound lane with the high beams on when another vehicle travelling westbound swerved to avoid hitting the woman's vehicle, report police.
As a result, the Port Perry woman, who was standing on the north side of her vehicle, was struck, as was the mailbox, say police.
The suspect vehicle then fled the scene, add authorities.
Based on debris left at the scene, police believe the suspect vehicle may be an older model, two-door Saturn with damage to the front passenger side area including the lower air deflector.
Passersby later found the woman lying in the roadway and stopped to offer assistance and called for help, say police. The victim was transported to a local hospital and later transferred to a Toronto hospital with serious injuries.
Officers with the Durham force's collision investigation unit are looking to speak with anyone who may have information about the collision or the suspect vehicle.
They're asked to contact Detective-Constable Chad Lee at 905-579-1520, extension 5231.
