DURHAM -- In the first week of enforcement, 63 charges were laid against motorists for using a cell phone or other devices while driving.
The Durham Regional Police laid 60 charges for holding or using a cell phone while not in the hands-free mode and three charges for holding or using an entertainment device while driving.
Bill 118 came into effect on Feb. 1, making it illegal to use hand-held wireless devices, such as cell phones, BlackBerries and iPods, while driving.
During the first week, police report compliance with the new law was very high.
"Motorists are reminded that holding or using these devices while driving is very unsafe and now illegal," says Sergeant Nancy van Rooy. "Distracted driving is one of the leading causes in motor vehicle collisions and is sometimes compared to driving while impaired."
The fine is $125, plus a $25 surcharge for victims of crime, making the total $150.
