WHITBY -- The teenaged victim in a stabbing that launched an intensive investigation by Durham police has been charged for misleading officers assigned to the case.
Durham police said Wednesday the 16-year-old Whitby boy, who was stabbed multiple times near All Saints Catholic School on Rossland Road Aug. 9, repeatedly lied to officers during interviews.
Seven full-time investigators worked the case with other cops, racking up hundreds of staff hours, police said. On Aug. 21, police arrested a 16-year-old Oshawa boy known to the victim and determined the attack was the result of a dispute between the two.
"Originally we believed it may have been a random act based on information provided by the victim," said police spokesman Dave Selby.
Police said the investigation would have been expedited had investigators not been misled.
The victim, whose identity is protected under the Youth Criminal justice Act, is charged with obstructing police, public mischief and three counts of breach of probation.
