CLARINGTON -- Local students will start and end their Christmas break on Thursdays two weeks apart, under a new school year calendar that received preliminary approval last week.
The Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board passed its calendar, setting out breaks and holidays, during a meeting last week.
While most remains similar to years past, the traditional end-on-a-Friday, start-on-a-Monday break over Christmas has been altered so students will leave school for Christmas break after the Wednesday, Dec. 22 school day, and return to classes on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011.
The change comes after an online survey, done last December, to get public input into how the winter break would run.
The board has "never done the midweek" end of school and return to class combination before, KPR Superintendent Sherry Summersides said.
But, "in the past, when we've surveyed people, we've found there has been a great deal of support for having time (off school) after the new year."
In years where there has been more time after New Year's Day before students returned to school, "people have said it was a nice time, that they really enjoyed" having a little time after the Christmas rush was over, Ms. Summersides said.
According to a release from the board, the "majority" of respondents indicated they preferred the mid-week start and end to the holiday.
The calendar must still be sent to the Ministry of Education for final approval.
