Large drug store proposed for main Newcastle intersection

Public meeting set Feb. 1

NEWCASTLE -- A public meeting will be held Feb. 1 to discuss a proposal to build a large Shoppers Drug Mart at the southeast corner of Mill Street and King Avenue in Newcastle.

The proposed 15,144-square-foot, one-storey building would result in demolition of a number of properties at that corner, said Carlos Salazar of Clarington's planning department.

Signs recently went up on the affected properties, letting people know of the plan.

Ensuring the new building fits the village is key, Mr. Salazar said.

"One component we're dealing with right now is the character of the building," Mr. Salazar said. "What we don't want is to have a boxy Shopper's Drug Mart. We want it to reflect the character of the community."

As much as Clarington desires development of types other than residential, "we want to see good quality development," Mr. Salazar said.

It's important to employ good urban design, given the visibility of the site, the planner noted.

"It's one of the entrances to Newcastle, so it would have to be properly designed," he said.

The public meeting, at which anyone with comments on the proposal is able to speak, will take place during the Feb. 1 general purpose and administration meeting, which begins at 9:30 a.m. at Clarington's Municipal Administrative Centre, 40 Temperance St. in Bowmanville.
