CLARINGTON -- The local fire department is warning against the use of Flying Lanterns, which are currently being sold online and at some retail stores.
The product resembles a small paper hot-air balloon, fueled by an open flame. When released the hot air produced by the fuel source can lift the lantern to extreme heights, allowing it to drift for long distances until the fuel is depleted.
While there have been no known instances locally, Clarington Fire Chief Gord Weir is still putting out a warning on them.
"They could be very dangerous should they get caught in trees or land on dry grass or brush, or, for that matter, on a home or cottage," he said.
