Little damage done in early morning blaze

BOWMANVILLE -- There has been another fire at the former Training School for Boys.

Clarington's fire department responded to a fire, noticed by security staff at the 2020 Lamb's Road site, just after 2 a.m. Thursday. At this point, it appears someone attempted to light a door on fire in one of the small buildings near the former cafeteria, Fire Chief Gord Weir said.

Fire prevention officials were on scene Thursday morning, to try to determine if the blaze was an act of vandalism.

The school, which also acted as a Second World War prisoner-of-war camp, holding high-ranking German officials, was the site of three separate fires which did extensive damage in March.

The former school had been the centre of debate just prior to the March fires. The property, which in recent years had been used as a campus for a variety of educational institutions, had been sold to a developer who was looking for permission to demolish the old buildings. Even before the fires, the Kaitlin Group, which now owns the property, had written to Clarington council, saying the buildings were a safety and liability concern because of ongoing trespass and vandalism.
